Design Concept
The design of the Hume Highway Southern Alliance works involves the following disciplines:
- Roadworks.
- Bridgeworks and other structures.
- Road and bridge stormwater drainage.
- Assistance with coordination of utilities relocations.
- Land survey including pre-construction ground and photogrammetric survey work.
- Control survey.
- Pavement design.
- Environmental Design and Management
Design activities also include construction services such as responding to requests for information, design changes, reviews of shop drawing details, construction phase design advice and production of ‘as constructed’ documentation.
The alliance designers also coordinate the activities of sub-consultants or other team members undertaking a range of specialist investigation and design services, including:
- Architecture, urban and landscape design.
- Street lighting and electrical reticulation design.
- Geotechnical site investigations and assessments.
- Noise mitigation.
- Relocation of other public utilities.
Design Process
The works have had a significant investigation and design component with the Hume Highway Southern Alliance requiring two separate RTA approvals prior to proceeding to the next phase of the alliance Works.
Scoping and Concept Phases
The Hume Highway Southern Alliance investigated and developed the preliminary concept designs provided by the RTA and from there developed:
- A concept design for the new carriageways and separate sections of carriageway.
- An updated set of design drawings for the alliance works (the ‘concept drawings’).
- A detailed construction program for the alliance works.
Detail Design Phase
Following RTA approval of the construction program, the Hume Highway Southern Alliance completed the project designs and construction work got underway.
The following urban design principles will be followed during the design and construction of the project:
- Provide a flowing road alignment responsive to the surrounding landscape.
- Provide a safe and enjoyable motoring experience that engages with the landscape of southern NSW, making best use of the views and vistas.
- Provide a highway corridor that protects and enhances local natural systems and local ecology of the location.
- Respect and respond to towns and communities along the corridor, and the historically and culturally significant aspects of the location.
- Achieve a simple selection of highway, elements and details consistent throughout the corridor, which meet safety requirements and minimise ongoing maintenance costs.
The design concept takes advantage of the scenic qualities of the area and provides a variety of enjoyable experiences for road users as they pass through areas with different visual characters.
